Rating the Characteristics of Duplex Stainless Steel

by Dec 24, 2018News

duplex-stainless-steel-pipesThere are many types of stainless steel alloys available, all of which carry their very own benefits and downsides. One of the most versatile of these alloys is duplex stainless steel, an alloy that excels on almost all fronts.

Curious as to what duplex stainless steel, also known as S31803 or 2205, has to offer? Read on! Below, we’re going to rate the various characteristics of duplex stainless steel.

Resistance to Stress Corrosion Cracking

Perhaps the most remarkable characteristic of duplex stainless steel is its resistance to stress corrosion cracking. This alloy of stainless steel holds up extremely well against corrosive damage.

For this reason, you’ll often see it used for applications where a corrosive environment is a certainty. The underwater oil industry and the chemical processing industry both make great use of duplex stainless steel, knowing that it can withstand wear and tear for a prolonged period of time.

Ductility

While they’re not the most ductile stainless steels on the market, duplex stainless steels still possess above-average ductility. This means that they can be flattened and shaped into a great number of objects.

While austenitic stainless steels are the most ductile, duplex stainless steels aren’t too far behind. It should also be noted that duplex stainless steels are far more ductile than ferritic stainless steels.

Toughness

When it comes to toughness, duplex stainless steels rate fairly high. While they’re not quite as tough as austenitic stainless steels, they’re substantially more tough than ferritic stainless steels.

This means that they can take quite a beating, resisting the effects of physical trauma without succumbing to cracks and fractures. In essence, duplex stainless steels are suitably tough enough to serve most functions.

Weldability

In terms of weldability, duplex stainless steel falters. Due to its unique structural consistency, it tends to melt when subjected to exceedingly high temperatures. Overall, austenitic stainless steels are much more weld-friendly.

However, this doesn’t mean that duplex stainless steel can never be welded. Temperature regulated welding can result in the successful fusion of duplex stainless steel. You should note, though, that it’s not an easy task. Great care and precision are required when attempting to weld duplex stainless steel.

Corrosion Resistance

As noted above, duplex stainless steel is highly resistant to stress corrosion cracking. In addition to this, it’s also highly resistant to rust. It should also be mentioned that it’s highly resistant to chloride corrosion. In essence, duplex is one of the better materials in terms of corrosion resistance.

Because it possesses top-notch anti-corrosive qualities, it thrives in wet conditions. Not only can it handle constant contact with freshwater and saltwater, but with chemicals as well. You’ll often see duplex being used for underwater pipes and chemical processing implements.

Cost

One of the key reasons for the popularity of duplex stainless steel is its low cost. This stainless steel can provide many of the same benefits as austenitic stainless steel, but for a fraction of the price.

The reason for the low cost of duplex? It has a relatively low nickel content. Nickel is a notoriously expensive metal.

We should note, however, that duplex is not the most affordable type of stainless steel available. Ferritic stainless steel is typically less expensive, for example.
